Matt Smith to leave Doctor Who at Christmas

Matt Smith to leave Doctor Who at Christmas

We've got some very sad news for all you Doctor Who fans out there – Matt Smith has decided to call it a day.

Matt, who's played the Time Lord for four years, will bow out at the end of the year; with the Christmas special being his last appearance.

*Sob, sob*

The 30-year-old has never hidden his desire to make it big in Hollywood so we aren't totally shocked to be saying goodbye; especially as his contract is believed to expire in November.

Plus he recently told Jonathan Ross that he refused to commit to Doctor Who beyond Christmas.

He said: "I am very happy doing it. I do the anniversary special, then the Christmas special. At the moment it's 2013 and we will see what 2014 holds."

An insider said: "Matt has told bosses he wants to bow out at Christmas."

Last night, the BBC said in a statement: "Sorry folks but even we don't know what's going to happen at Christmas. It's not been written yet! But Matt loves the show and is to start filming the unmissable 50th anniversary, and the new series starting on Easter Saturday."

So who will replace Matt?

David Harewood

There are already ideas about who will replace Matt, including Homeland's David Harewood, Rory Kinnear; who played M's chief of staff in Skyfall, Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch, Alex Jennings; who made a great Prince Charles in The Queen. Plus our personal favourite – Dame Helen Mirren!

So who would you like to see as the new Doctor?
