Cindy Crawford blames age gap for the break-up of her marriage to Richard Gere

Age ain't nothing but a number, the late, great Aaliyah sang once. Not so for Cindy Crawford, who put the break-up of her marriage to Richard Gere down to their 15-year age difference.

The supermodel met the actor when she was a nubile 22 and he was a relatively more vintaged 37 at a BBQ hosted by their mutual friend, the photographer Herb Ritts. They divorced in 1995.

"[…]I was still 22 and at 22 - as a young woman - I was kind of still figuring out who I was and what I wanted to be and he was already 37," Crawford revealed in Oprah's TV show Masterclass (basically a confessional from a celebrity) which aired on Monday night.

"So in some ways, he knew that I was still growing and changing. I just didn't want to hear it from him because at 22 you think you know everything. You think you're already formed. And then you realise, 10 years later, that they were totally right." What did they quibble about? She wanted to watch MTV, and he the Discovery Channel? She liked hamsters, he preferred gerbils (if you catch our drift)? Crawford, 47, is now happily married to her husband of 15 years, Rande Gerbe (he's 50 - three-years age gap - phew).

In the interview, Crawford also opens up about her looks ("I felt judged by the way that I looked. I think it set me on a course to represent myself as someone with a brain"), the loss of her brother to Leukaemia when she was 10 ("I see my brother as the force, the power that helped boost me off in my life in my journey") and, in a probable hangover from her relationship with famous Buddhist Gere, waxes philosophical on life ("My goal is not to be happy every day - to me, that's fake. My goal is to be" - dramatic pause - " present ").
