Nail Summer's Laid-Back Chic for Festivals and Beyond

It's true that we go through a Coachella-obsessed phase when the music festival rolls around each spring. We love to see the questionable fashion choices of our favorite celebs who, in spite of impeccable red carpet style, somehow lose the desire to look chic. Instead, they're overtaken by the apparently stronger urge to look like a Woodstock relic. All good fun.

At any rate, the fashion aftermath of Coachella got our gears turning. Is it possible to be stylish while still rocking out to music in a field? And for that matter, what about all of our other outdoor summer fun? Carnivals, picnics, fundraisers, etc., are all opportunities for the fashion savvy to fall prey to baser style desires or rise to the occasion and remain true to their high aesthetics. We found some pieces we think are ideal for your most casual warm weather outings — outdoor concerts included.

  • Let There Be Pockets

Comfort and style meet functionality. This skirt can hold your phone, your lipstick and a credit card, just try to keep your feet on the ground and the pockets' contents where you put them.

    $54.99 at Loft.

    Let There Be Pockets
  • Shine On

We love sequins for day. And we can see this skirt in so many situations. With so many simple tops and sandals.

    $59.99 at Mango.

    Shine On
  • Day Player

A loose-fitting romper is essential for outdoor romps through grassy knolls. They let you be a bit more flexible with your activities without sacrificing your femininity.

    $41.56 at ASOS.

    Day Player
  • Star

Love the simple star embroidery and lightweight, breathable fabric of this little boho gem. Not too costumey, it has just the right touch of vintage style.

    $128 at Free People.

    Star
  • Strawberry Dream

As does this dress. Not surprisingly, they're both from Free People, a retailer whose entire stock seems to have been made for the summer festival set.

    $98 at Free People.

    Strawberry Dream
  • Paisley Crop

Adore this top. High-waisted khaki shorts, a la boyfriend slouchy, paired with this will keep you comfy and cool.

    $46 at Need Supply.

    Paisley Crop
  • The Back

The open back adds a little sex appeal, too.

    The Back
  • Music Striper

This had to be included. For all of the girls out there who can't get rid of their stripes just because everyone else is in florals.

    $45.00 at Topshop.

    Music Striper
  • Trouser Love

Again with the light, breezy fabrics that don't cling or restrict movement. Leve it to Zara to make this cut beautiful, not dowdy.

    $59.90 at Zara.

    Trouser Love
  • Open Toe

One thing that's hard to understand is the pairing of bare legs and booties. I mean, toes need to breathe in warm weather. Plus, skin is often more easily washed after a bout with dirt and mud than an expensive pair of kicks. Keep your sandals simple, inexpensive and replaceable.

    $30 at Macys.

    Open Toe
  • The Coverup

It's not uncommon for the heat of an August day to have us running for our bathing suits and an ultra light tank. This one manages to cover, yet show just enough to feel young and fresh.

    $32 at Need Supply.

    The Coverup
  • The Back

The twist back is perfect to wear over bikini tops and one-pieces alike.

    The Back
  • Go Nude

Easy, breezy, begging for your chunkiest, most rustic statement jewelry. Though not bodycon, it manages to exude a certain amount of sex appeal due to its skin tone shade.

    $88 at Need Supply.

    Go Nude
  • The Back

The peek-a-boo back is adorable, too.

    The Back
  • Crystal Tan

Your first instinct is to grab your Ray Bans, we know. Why not try a less expensive, funkier pair of sunnies that you won't cry over if they get broken, swiped or lost? These look scrumptious, like candy.

    $69.83 at ASOS.
