Want To Dress Unisex? Raf Simons' Mr Porter Collection Blurs The Boundaries

This season the boundaries between menswear and womenswear seem to be more blurred than ever before. Whether it is J.W. Anderson sending men down the catwalk in flounced shorts and bra tops,( items remarkably similar to those in his womenswear collection), or the female model, Casey Legler being booked as a male model, women wearing menswear and vice versa seems to have gained momentum.

For this week’s issue, in light of this new(ish) fashion mood, myself and Fashion Editor, Catherine Nieto road tested Raf Simon’s new menswear capsule collection for MrPorter.com. The collection, which will be online this month, draws on Raf’s own SS13 men’s show combining his great sense of colour with grunge inspired florals. Made up of thirteen pieces, from t-shirts and shorts, to more formal shirts and blazers, with a hi-top trainer thrown into the mix Catherine and I mixed up the pieces to show how you can make florals work for both!

Both of us took our own approaches to the road test, whilst Catherine took the floral prints to a girly, playful place, I drew on their preppy vibe and created a print clash with a chino thrown in for good measure. For instance Catherine tied her white floral shirt at the waist for a ‘Little House on the Prairie’ vibe whilst I couldn’t resist teaming the shirt with a floral short from the collection to create a full on collision.  

The conclusion: florals aren’t gender specific and women shouldn’t be scared of purchasing something just because it’s categorised as ‘menswear’. Equally, both can work a floral without looking like an exhibition at the Chelsea flower show!
