Denise Van Outen defends her Strictly place ahead of the series opener tonight
Noted dance commentator Chris Evans has questioned Denise Van Outen's place on the upcoming series of Strictly Come Dancing. Wait, hold on. That doesn't sound right.
Let's try again. 'A Radio 2 DJ who once sold all his sofas on Camden Market' has questioned whether Denise Van Outen should star in the new series of Strictly Come Dancing, set to start tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm.
Why would Chris Evans even say anything
And Denise has said she is about as puzzled and baffled as we are that Evans has singled her out for criticism ahead of the opening show.
The 38-year-old said that despite her stage experience performing as Roxie Hart in West End hit Chicago, she was nervous ahead of putting on some sequins and tassles and dancing around on national TV. And we do not blame her.
"I can do the basics thanks to theatre school," she said. "But I haven't danced properly for 15 years.
"I'm most nervous about the fact that people will think I can dance already because of my stage career."
Competitors
Well, whether Denise can dance or not, she faces tough competition in the form of Girls Aloud singer Kimberley Walsh – who has quite a lot of dance experience, remember, what with being in an all-singing, all-dancing girl group for ten entire years – and Olympic medallist Louis Smith, who will be bringing his gymnastic experience to the dance floor along with his side-parting and his little beard.
We are left wondering what exactly Chris Evans has against people who are able to dance being on a TV show about dancing. Would you rather have 12 uncoordinated John Sergeant's pirouetting into each other for an entire series, Chris? Actually, that sounds amazing. We're calling the cloning lab immediately.
