Creatures of Comfort, Los Angeles
This clothes shop has just the right amount of slightly weird bits to keep it interesting but not too edgy. It has quite a few European labels, but the whole experience makes it nicer than seeing them at home. creaturesofcomfort.us
4th Floor, London WC1
A little-known hair salon that is celebrating 20 years in business. It's at the top of an art deco building and has amazing artwork. You will want to live there. 4thfloor.co.uk
Salts Mill, Saltaire
A short walk from my parents' house, this old mill was derelict until 1987, when it was turned into a gallery for David Hockney's work, with a café, bookshop and home store. A real treat. saltsmill.org.uk

Lost Gardens of Heligan, Cornwall
We visited here while on holiday in Cornwall last year and discovered that it is possible to grow pineapples in Britain. It also has lovely hand-crafted sustainable gifts and delicious natural food to buy. heligan.com

Marlow & Sons, New York
I love this place in Brooklyn. The food is delicious - I'd recommend the brick chicken and any chocolate salted-caramel pudding they have. marlowandsons.com
Darkroom, London WC1
Opposite our shops on Lamb's Conduit Street, this is always on my list of places to buy presents (mostly for myself). Lulu and Rhonda have an amazing eye for jewellery, accessories and interiors. darkroomlondon.com
The Curio Parlor, Paris
This feels a bit like sitting in your grandparents' living-room - only not as stuffy and with cocktails. I'd recommend the lavender one. curioparlor.com
